Obituary for Charles (Chuck) Vander Heyden

Charles (Chuck) Vander Heyden passed away suddenly at his home in Peterborough on Friday, December 23, 2022, at the age of 75.

Cherished husband of Connie (Harth), the centre of his world for over 52 years, devoted son of the late Cornelius and Theresia (Stevens) Vander Heyden, beloved father of Justin (Arija Birze) and Adrienne (Eric Laing), and loving Opa to Elliott and Scarlet, who will all miss him dearly.

Born in Oisterwijk, Netherlands, Chuck was the adored little brother of Kees (Francoise), Charlotte Randazzo (deceased), Anne Loch, Gabriel (deceased) and Jan (Claudia, deceased), and dear uncle to many nieces and nephews. A father figure to many, Chuck acted as a role model, confidante, wise advisor and compassionate ear for everyone in his life. He was always generous with his famous bear hugs. Most of all, Chuck and Connie’s unwavering love for one another was a benchmark for those around them in how to have a successful and happy marriage.

Chuck was an accomplished stained glass artist. His keen eye for colour and composition were without parallel. After retiring as a detective from a rewarding 30-year career with the Toronto Police Service, Chuck and Connie bought a home in Buckhorn, ON where they formed many friendships and savoured the peace and beauty of cottage country.

A kind and gentle soul, Chuck always held a special place in his heart for his furry family. He was happiest when creating art or doing projects around the house – Chuck took great pride and care in everything he did.

Chuck was a fierce competitor in games and his wonderful sense of humour will live on in his children and grandchildren. Chuck’s legacy will be the simple teaching that family is everything.

The world is a better place because Chuck lived. His family and friends will love and remember him always.

Cremation has taken place and a celebration of life will be announced in the spring. In lieu of flowers, donations to the Heart & Stroke Foundation in his honour would be appreciated.
