Nelson, David “Dave”

It is with great sadness that the family of David Nelson announces his passing on August 30th at his farm in Keene surrounded by his family at the age 76 years.

He is lovingly remembered by his wife Shelley, daughter Stephanie (Dean) and son Jason (Nikki), grandchildren Georgia-Mae and Sydney and his stepchildren, Tara, Nicole (Mark), Paul (Donna), Gregory (Amanda) O’Donoghue, siblings, Willis, Gary (Beverlie), Elinor (Ivan), Bryon (Margaret), Ruth Anne, Sheryn and Deena (Sue), nieces & nephews, Merna (Ken), Jennifer (Grant), Heidi (Pat), Kelly, Katherine (Tony), Elaine (Kevin), Graeme (Jessica), Dawn (Ken), Angie (Brian), Jim, Paul, Ellen (Shawn) and Adrienne and many great nieces and nephews.

Dave had rich full life and lost his first wife Sharon on Oct 9, 2004 and later recaptured happiness with Shelley. He spent his life dedicated to his community. He served 44 years on Otonabee-South Monaghan council, 37 of those as Reeve. He served two terms as Warden and when his political journey ended the term Reeve was retired. He will always be remembered as “The Last Reeve” in the County of Peterborough. He received many awards throughout his political career, but he was particularly pleased with two awards; Helen Keller Fellowship Award from Keene Lions and Peterborough Historical Society 2018 Marth Kidd award.

Dave spent his career working as a draftsman at GE in Peterborough. After his retirement, he worked on his beloved farm with his family just outside of Keene.

A procession, to which all are welcomed, will be held at 10-11AM on Friday, September 4th. Starting from his home, it will pass through Lang Pioneer Village, by The Keene Arena, The Otonabee South Monaghan Municipal Office, Otonabee South Monaghan Fire Hall and The Keene United Church with his final stop at Upper Keene Cemetery.
In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to:

While we knew Dave through his municipal career, it was the fun memories curling in Keene that we will remember the best. He always had a good story and a winning shot!

I remember working at Keendale Lodge in the 80’s with Dave, Willis and Bryon. Dave was always great to work with on the farm and his sense of humour and upbeat attitude made my years there so memorable.
Stephanie and Jason, we are sorry to hear about your dad. He influenced so many lives and will never be forgotten.

Dear Shelley, Jason and Stephanie,

Wow! Wasn’t that a beautiful procession in Dave’s honour today. He would be pleased! He was so loved and respected by everyone in the community. He gave so much, through his political career, over the many, many years. He will be sorely missed by all who had the privilege of knowing him and whom he considered a friend. Please accept our dearest and sincerest sympathies. We, too, are honoured to have had him as a friend. May your memories comfort you as you grieve this great loss. We will miss him. In sympathy and friendship, Bill and Lynn Flindall
