Obituary for Vic Wiens

David Victor Wiens, known as Vic
March 15, 1939 - April 16, 2022

Vic died peacefully at Peterborough Regional Health Centre on April 16, 2022 after a courageous battle with colon cancer. He is dearly missed by his son Michael Wiens and daughter Jennifer Wiens, his son-in-law Glen Farrelly and his granddaughter Nora Wiens Farrelly, as well as his siblings Martha Wiens and Henry Wiens and wife Helen. He is predeceased by his dear wife Nancy (Getz), his sister Margaret Tiessen and his parents Jacob and Anna (Enns).

Vic grew up on a farm in Leamington, Ontario, where he developed a lifelong love of pigs. As a young man, he worked a variety of jobs such as construction but eventually decided to become a social worker, obtaining an MSW from Waterloo Lutheran University. He married Nancy Getz in 1969 and they moved to Pembroke, Ontario where they raised their two children. Vic was a social worker with Family and Children’s Services of Renfrew County for close to 30 years, working in child protection as well as adoption. After the death of his beloved wife Nancy in 2002, Vic and his son Michael moved to Peterborough, Ontario.

Vic was a kind, generous, and funny man. He was known as Mr. Fix It and Jennifer and Michael relied on him throughout their adult lives to fix everything that goes wrong in their houses - sinks, door knobs, shed roof, shelf building - he would do anything to help, often without even being asked. Vic was a proud grandfather, spending as much time with his granddaughter Nora as he could. Always a big kid at heart, he was happy to play games, ride teeter totters, and spend hours trying on silly hats at Dollarama with her. Vic went to almost every performance and dance recital that Nora was in, and has always been her biggest fan.

Vic and Michael shared an apartment that Vic liked to call the “Pig Sty” - not because it was filthy, but because it housed his collection of about 64 piggy banks and likely hundreds of other pig items - like stuffed animals, kitchen utensils and puzzles. Vic was very proud of his pigs and he and Mike would arrange them in little scenes and decorate them for all special occasions - such as putting bunny ears on them at Easter and having them all wave little Canadian flags for Canada Day.

The family will cherish so many wonderful memories of Vic and miss him forever.
