Obituary for George Subasic

GEORGE MATT SUBASIC
George passed away quietly and quickly on May 25, 2022 at Frost Manor in Lindsay, just shy of his 92nd birthday.

“He sure is a character!” That’s what everyone says about George. He was a true people person who loved to laugh.

Born in a humble home built by his father in Trail, B.C., George managed to find his way to University of Washington in Seattle. There, he lived in the international student residence, an experience that developed abilities he’d use for the rest of his life. He obtained a “4 year degree in three years,” as he’d always proudly say (it was printed on his degree).

After graduation, he worked in the patent office in Ottawa where he met Joan, his first wife. For a number of years he worked with IBM Canada as a sales engineer. Then as an Engineering Coordinator for the University of Waterloo. In that role, he worked from home and out of his car before there was even a name for it.

In 1972-74 he was sent to Ibadan, Nigeria by the Canadian International Development Agency (CIDA) to create a cooperative program for the University of Ibadan. He met his second wife, Sandra Getty in the late 80s. He was a proud mentor to her sons, Doug and John.

He became blind in 2017, but still fully enjoyed life right up until the end. He learned to use his Google Home to play music for guests and get answers to many questions.

Always ready with a joke, he numbered them for easy re-telling. He loved to recap episodes of Three and a Half Men. His favourite comedians were George Carlin and Robyn Williams. And he always said, “The less I drink, the more I enjoy it.”

Science and engineering were a lifelong fascination for him. An active thinker, he regularly came up with ideas for new games or products he’d like to patent.

Pre-deceased by his daughter Cathe (2016) and son Mark (1961), sister Lucille and brother William (2021).

He leaves behind a daughter, Colleen, son, Michael, grandson, Marlo, grandaughter, Samantha, and his first wife, Joan.
