Obituary for Hilda Higley (Wilson)

It is with great sadness that our family announces the passing of our beloved mother, Hilda Anna Alice Higley on December 27, 2022. She passed peacefully at her home in Peterborough, Ontario after celebrating her 105th birthday. She was predeceased by her husband Earl Frederick Higley in 1971, and by William Henry Frederick Solway in 1995, as well as 6 sisters and 2 brothers. She is survived by her younger sister Ruth Root of Kalamazoo Michigan. Hilda is survived by her sons Wade (Chantal) Higley of Stouffville, Ontario, Christopher (Hazel) Higley of Peterborough, Ontario, and daughter Wendy (Thomas) Seguin (nee Higley) of Stratford, Ontario. She is survived by grandchildren Mathew Higley, Dinah MacGillivary (nee Higley), David Seguin (d. 2007), Tyler Seguin, Jessica Seguin, Leigh Anna Higley, Bud Higley (d. 2018), and great-grandchildren: Max, Robert, and Cooper Higley, Parker and Ava Spoor, Maggie MacGillivary, Cole, Chelsea, and Charly Kemp, Hudson Higley and Kennedy Edwards. Hilda adored her stepchildren Jim (Paula) Solway, Bert (Bev) Solway, and step-grandchildren Dean, Deanna, and Brook Solway, Bonnie Burton (nee Solway), and step-great-grandchildren Dakota and Jayden Solway, Aaden and Myla Burton, and Chloe Solway. Hilda cherished her family and the friendships she made in life and leaves a hole in the lives of those who knew her. She had a fierce love for her family and friends and was always there as a shoulder to lean on. The bond between her and her many siblings was deep. All they needed was the company of each other and a game of Scrabble or a deck of cards. She created life memories for everyone she touched and always provided unconditional love. She loved her life filled with adventure and loved to travel. She never missed a birthday, wedding, or celebration of life. She continued to attend family reunions well into her 100 years. Hilda and Earl “Bud” married in 1939 and raised their 3 children in Port Credit, Ontario. Together they built a summer cottage on Lake Kasshabog where they enjoyed spending time with friends and family. She is remembered fondly as the matriarch of the cottage and a wonderful social director. There was always an open invitation to celebrate the summer cottage life. In her retirement years, she wintered in Florida with her second husband Bill, where she swept lizards from the trailer and learned how to play pool very well. She was an accomplished poet, seamstress, and a whiz with a pair of knitting needles and a ball of yarn. She made many first sweaters worn by her many nieces, nephews, grandchildren, and great-grandchildren. She smocked beautiful dresses, knit warm mittens and hats, and baked butter tarts, pies, and apple dumplings to satisfy everyone’s sweet tooth. She had the foresight to pass on her butter tart and pastry recipes. A small family service is planned for January 11, 2023, at 2 p.m. Those interested in viewing the service, please register at www.AshburnhamFuneral.ca In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made in Hilda’s name to Alzheimer’s Society, PRHC Palliative Care, the David Award, or a charity of choice would be welcomed.
