Obituary for Kathleen Webb

WEBB, Kathleen ‘Mary Lou’
February 14, 1946 ~ October 30, 2022

Mary Lou was born to Reginald and Kathleen Webb in Vancouver. When Mary Lou showed up on Valentine's Day in 1946, they broke the mold — a true one-of-a-kind. Her inexhaustible humour and positive attitude saw her through a lifetime of twists and turns which she always met head-on with an unwavering spirit of cheeky banter and optimism; she turned water into wine every time. A survivor bar none, she met life's challenges, of which there were many, with an unwavering strength that inspired and endeared those whose paths she crossed. Her time amongst us took her from New York to Vancouver and back a time or two where, for the last 25 years, she finally settled in Peterborough, following a friend who had become family.

A free-spirit whose passions were vast and varied, starting with baseball which became a lifelong obsession as a result of accidentally tuning in as a teen. This is where her lasting love affair with the New York Yankees grabbed her heart and never let go. She developed an uncanny radar to suss out baseball memorabilia, with Babe Ruth leading the charge.

Pop culture captured her imagination, the more retro the better, which led her to a career in the music industry introducing the world to jazz, championing artists, from classic to contemporary. She followed daytime soaps of the 80's making very good use of her VCR, and if anybody loved Lucy, it was MaryLou. From classic movies to classic toys, from Mickey Mouse to Mickey Mantle, she appreciated all of it.

On the home front, she befriended the feline world early and was never without her four legged friends, not turning her back on a cat who needed a home. Another favourite place, her garden — whether on a balcony, patio or porch, always thrived and always from seed.

A deep thinker and an avid reader, she understood the trials and tribulations of the vulnerable and championed those who needed a voice, especially those in the AIDS community and was a proud PRIDE Day participant for decades.

She had a heart of gold, lending a hand, an ear and her time for anyone, always. She leaves a deep hole in the hearts of those that truly knew her, as we surely know she is indeed in a better place, and will give new meaning to resting in peace — none more deserved than our dear friend Mary Lou.

At Mary Lou’s request there will be no funeral service. In lieu of flowers please make a donation to the Lakefield Animal Welfare Society, 2887 Lakefield Road.
