Obituary for Lorna Hilborn (Knox)

Hilborn: Lorna Mabel
April 12, 1935 to January 26, 2023
At Peterborough Extendicare, Thursday, January 26, 2023 with her family by her side, Lorna Hilborn of Peterborough in her 88th year. Predeceased by her lifelong friend and partner Clair Hilborn. Devoted mother to Brian, Larry and Kathleen (Dwight). Cherished grandma of Samantha and Nicole. Dearest Gigi of Nora and Marty. Blind as a young girl, Lorna attended the W. Ross McDonald School for the Blind in Brantford Ontario where she met her best friend and future husband Clair Hilborn. After regaining her sight in her twenties, Lorna married and gave birth to three children. Tragically losing her sight once again by the time her youngest was three, Lorna cultivated a deep resilience that carried her throughout her life; moving forward with fortitude, grace, love and kindness. Lorna was, in her heart and soul, an advocate for marginalized individuals, particularly those with a disability, and devoted her life to helping others. Along with her husband and the help of many volunteers, she founded the Ontario Audio Library Service, a talking book service for postsecondary students with a print disability. She stayed on as Executive Director until her retirement at 70 years of age. She also dedicated many years as Chair of the Council of Persons with a Disability. Those who knew Lorna will fondly remember her with a guide dog by her side. Donations to the charity of your choice or the Canadian Guide Dogs for the Blind would be appreciated by the family. There will be no service for Lorna but in her honour, have a warm cup of tea and listen to anything by Gordon Lightfoot. She would love that.
