YOUNG, Marguerite

The world lost a beloved mother, Marguerite Young (nee Hickey) on September 01, 2022 at the age of 91 years. Marguerite passed away peacefully at the Peterborough Regional Health Centre, surrounded by her loving family.

Marguerite is survived by her children Jennifer (Wally), Mary Pat (Brett), Fergus, Charles (Kelly), Anna Marie (Andy), Colleen (late Gerry), as well as her grandchildren: Fraser, Lauren, Ryan, Brett, John, Kaitlin, and Christina. She is also survived by her sister Jean Heffernan and brother Clair Hickey (Lois).

Marguerite was predeceased by her brother Michael, sisters Nellie, Marcella, Eileen, Lucile, her parents and her son- in- law Gerry.

Marguerite was the foundation and pillar of her family.
She was always there to assist and help in any way possible with her cherished love and guidance. She never failed to be there when needed.

Marguerite was born in Omemee, Ontario July 27, 1931 to proud parents Frank Hickey and Mary Dewan. She was raised on a farm and at the age of 16, Marguerite left home for Midland, Ontario to begin her first teaching position. Teaching was a passion for Marguerite. She inspired her students for their personal, athletic, and academic achievements. Before and after retirement she was forever stopped and thanked by her students for her affect and contribution to their lives. Throughout her career she enjoyed educating students in such schools as St. Martins in Ennismore, St. Anne’s, St. Paul’s and Immaculate in Peterborough and St. Mary’s in Lindsay where she also took on Vice Principal duties.

Marguerite earned her Bachelor of Arts Degree from Trent University and her Master’s Degree in Education from the University of Toronto.

Marguerite retired from teaching at the age of 67 to pursue her hobbies of gardening and cooking. In retirement, she also loved to travel and was able to visit such places as Egypt, France, England and Ireland. Ireland being her favorite.

The family of Marguerite Young would like to thank the staff of Canterbury Gardens for providing loving care to our mom while she was a resident. We would like to thank Dr. Geoffrey Grieve who provided mom with medical care over the many years that she was his patient. We would also like to thank Dr. Neville for his care and understanding while mom resided at Canterbury Gardens.

Family and friends will be received at Ashburnham Funeral Home 840 Armour Road on Tuesday September 6, 2022 from 2-4 pm and 6-8 pm. A Mass of Christian burial to be held at 11 am on Wednesday September 7, 2022 at Immaculate Conception Parish, 386 Rogers Street, Peterborough. Interment St. Peter’s Cemetery.
