Obituary for Michael Shallhorn

SHALLHORN, Michael George
December 25, 1936–July 6, 2022

Michael (Mike) died peacefully at Peterborough Regional Health Centre in the early hours of Wednesday, July 6. He will be greatly missed by Pat (nee Patricia Ann Kendall), his beloved wife of 62 years, and his children Richard (Nancy Baker), Carol (Tom Lumley), and Christine. Also left to mourn are his granddaughters Kendall, Jenna (Amy), and Tara (Kira). He never had the chance to meet his great-grandson, Beckham, but took great delight in seeing photos of him. He was predeceased by his older brother John (Marilyn) and is survived by his younger brother Paul (Frances) and his nieces and nephew.

Mike worked for 33 years at IBM, starting in the mailroom and advancing up the ranks – but he always said his greatest accomplishment was persuading his pretty coworker Pat to marry him. They started a family in Markham, enjoying good times with family and friends in their backyard pool and at their Ril Lake cottage. Mike loved sports and played hockey, golf, tennis, and senior slo pitch.

When the chance of early retirement came, he rose to the challenge, and he and Pat filled their days with travel (the US, the Caribbean, Mexico, England, Europe, South America, Australia, and New Zealand), several moves (Kelowna, Huntsville, Peterborough), and escaping the cold in various sunny places. Mike also enjoyed checking out cars—in case it was time to get a new one—and catching all the major tennis and golf tournaments on TV.

Health challenges slowed him down in the past year, but he never lost his dry sense of humour and joy at being with his family.

Thank you to the staff at Peterborough Regional Health Centre for providing him with kind care over the last several months.

In accordance with Mike’s wishes, cremation has taken place and a private family gathering held.
If you wish to honour his memory, donate to a charity of your choice, raise a glass, and enjoy a sunset.
