Obituary for Norman (Norm) Joseph Slater

SLATER, Norman Joseph
November 30th, 1953 - November 29th, 2022

Norman Joseph Slater died at Hospice Peterborough on November 29, 2022, one day shy of his sixty-ninth birthday.

Norm led his life with determination, resourcefulness, generosity, and kindness, and he will be sorely missed by his wife Marjorie Charmaine Eddy, his son Gabriel Hart Slater-Eddy, his daughter-in-law Emma Whitehouse, his granddaughter Birdie, his brothers Michael James Slater of London and Ronald John Slater of Sudbury, and his sister-in-law Helen Jeanette Dodge of Paris (Steve). Norm was also a beloved uncle to Emma McFarland and Ollie McFarland.

Norm was President, Founder, and CEO of Capella Telecommunications Inc. He was also President of Manta Test Systems Inc., Incospec Communications Inc., Markdale Cable TV, and ESA Communication Systems Inc. Norm’s business acumen was matched by his passion for social justice, affordable housing, and universal childcare. He served on the Peterborough Community Legal Centre Board of Directors, and he was a long-standing supporter of and volunteer for the NDP, serving roles on the local Executive and as sign coordinator. Many will remember Norm’s knock on the door at the start of every campaign, saying “It is now time for all good people to come to the aid of the party.”

He loved the challenge of complicated projects, gourmet food and wine, but also take-out food and pop, the occasional cigar, singing off key, planting trees, and puttering in the garden.

A memorial service for Norm will be held at St. John’s Anglican Church (99 Brock Street, Peterborough) on Saturday, December 10th, 2022, at 2:00 pm, with a reception to follow. A visitation will be held at Ashburnham Funeral Home (840 Armour Road, Peterborough) on Friday, December 9th, 2022, from 6:00 – 8:00 pm. Masks are reccomended.

For those who may wish to honour Norm’s memory, donations can be made to One City Peterborough. He would also love you to plant a tree.
