KOYANAGI, Samuel Kenji

It is with profound sorrow that we announce the passing of our beloved Sam. Sam passed away on January 3, 2021 in Peterborough at the age of 25. Loving son of Kelly McKnight and Anthony Koyanagi. Much-loved brother of Caileigh McKnight and Nicola Koyanagi. Cherished grandson of Bill (late Myrna) McKnight and Ken (late Avril) Koyanagi. Dear nephew of Karyn McKnight, Jamie, Greg and Laura Koyanagi. Sam will be sadly missed by many cousins and friends.

Sam loved the outdoors and travel. He especially enjoyed biking and his time out West where he spent his summers tree planting. Sam was a talented artist in drawing and poetry. He was a kind and caring individual with a huge heart and an infectious smile. He gave the best hugs. Sam shared a special connection with his mother who will forever hold him in her heart.

Sam tried very hard to heal himself. He also did his best to support others. To honour Sam’s spirit of compassion, a donation to Kids Help Phone or to a local organization that works to support youth mental health would be appreciated.

In lieu of flowers, please consider planting a tree in Sam’s memory. Online condolences may be left at

Our sincere and deep condoleances for Sam's family & friends. We are two sisters from Quebec who were planting trees with Sam. He was like a brother for us out there in the bush. We will always remember him as a little sunshine; his kindness and sensitivity were remarkable. He was singing songs to cheer us up on the block during rainy days and he was imitating the birds melody.

We send you a lot of love. Take all the time you need to take care of yourself & heal your hurt hearts.

Here is a photo that makes us smile.
