Obituary for West Doherty

IN LOVING MEMORY OF
WEST JAMES DOHERTY
They are the sun that sets in the West.

We are deeply heartbroken to announce the loss of our dear friend, beloved sibling, brave child
and treasured soulmate – West James Doherty. Born March 4, 1993 in Peterborough, Ontario.
West passed away on March 23rd, 2023 in Guelph, Ontario after a long, courageous battle with
mental health.

West was a beautiful beam of human sunshine to everyone who called them friend or family.
With a smile that lit up the world, they were funny, silly, deeply caring and thoughtful. Their
fervent love for living creatures, particularly those unable to defend themselves, was
unmatched. They adored animals and worked to protect and respect their rights while devoting
themselves to veganism and volunteering with Karuna Farm Sanctuary in Mount Forest.

In addition to aiding their animal brethren, West was dedicated to helping people who were
struggling with their mental health. They did this even while fighting against the darkness within
themself. West pursued a program called Drug and Alcohol Counselling through Fleming
College’s Sutherland Campus in Peterborough and found themself working in the field in
Guelph. Their latest position had them helping those dealing with substance use disorders and
mental illness find housing.

West is survived by their twin sister Nicole Doherty, their beloved sisters and partners Michelle
Doherty (Ryan) and Laura Doherty (Corey) and their parents Jim and Debra Doherty. West is
also survived by the many friends they considered family, who are too numerous to name (a
testament to their powerful love and impact).
West was cremated in accordance with their wishes through an environmentally conscious
process called aquamation. A celebration of life will be held at a later date in Guelph. In tribute
to the causes that moved them, donations can be made to Karuna Farm Sanctuary, Sea
Shepherd Conservation Society, Lakefield Animal Welfare Society, or any farm sanctuary/animal
rescue of choice.

How light carries on endlessly, even after death
With shortness of breath
You explained the infinite
And how rare and beautiful it is to even exist"..
