Obituary

Vicki Langwieder, age 88, passed away in the presence of her two daughters on November 11, 2020 at the Peterborough Hospice after a yearlong battle with an auto immune disease and then leukemia.

Born in Sydney Mines, Nova Scotia, to her Lithuanian parents; Vicki was incredibly proud of her roots and her family history. At the early age of 13 she was withdrawn from school to care for her mother and younger sibling. At the age of 17 she became a hairdresser, by 20 she opened her own salon, and by 24 she had purchased a dodge hardtop convertible and paid for the down payment on our parents first home in Hamilton, Ontario.

Travelling to Germany with her husband (Hardy Langwieder 1932-2006) and three young daughters proved her resilience and determination to handle any and all situations; traits which carried her through the many trials, joys and losses in her life. After four years in Germany Vicki and her family returned to Canada and became owners of a resort in North Bay, Ontario. The resorts success was largely in part to her incredible work ethic and ability to make anyone she met feel welcomed.

Following 12 years in the tourism industry and sending children off on their own, Vicki ventured out to begin the second stage of her life. Returning to Hamilton, Vicki went back to school at the age of 60 to become a Personal Support Worker. She was passionate toward and enjoyed caring for the elderly. This was also evident in her years of volunteering with the VON, Palliative Care homes, and singing in multiple choirs that visited senior residences. Vicki loved to stay fit, walking with her girlfriends daily, participating in yoga and fitness classes, playing scrabble and euchre, and attending concerts, but what she most valued was spending time with her family. A mother of three daughters Debbie Schafer (husband Heinz, daughters Anna and Caroline), Janet Young (husband Brad and daughter Danielle), and Lisa Langwieder (daughter Alexandra and son Benjamin). She was thrilled to be blessed with her first great grandchild, Konstantin, this year.

Travelling was another passion of Vicki’s. She travelled as far north as Alaska, south to Panama, west to BC and as far east as Croatia. Over her years of travelling she visited over 15 different countries accompanied by her daughters Janet or Debbie.

As a resident of Auburn Village Vicki enjoyed the company of many neighbours and was greatly appreciative of the many cards and good wishes she received during her illness. The family would like to thank the staff at the Peterborough Regional Health Centre and the Peterborough Hospice for their incredible care of our mother. In lieu of flowers we welcome you to make a donation to the Peterborough Hospice in memory of Vicki.

I met Vicki shortly after I moved to Auburn Village Gardens about 4 1/2 years ago. I was so impressed by her love of life and activity. She was truly an example of how to age gracefully. What a mentor. I already miss her so much.
I wish to express my sincere condolences to her family as they face this difficult time.

My close friendship with Vicki developed very quickly since the first time I met her. We shared many similar interests and experiences, i.e.having immigrant European parents for one, and were able to connect immediately despite the age gap between us. Her zest for life was always apparent as she encouraged me to get out there and remain as active as much as possible. She never gave up her youthful enthusiasm, a great role model at an age no one believed. I have enjoyed her company during games of scrabble, and many local theatrical and musical events.Vicki was a genuine, compassionate, kind and gentle soul. I will really miss you Vicki and your upbeat nature. My deepest condolences to Vicki's family. May you cherish all the good memories! Gabriele at Auburn Village Gardens.
